By default, HelpKit organizes your content in categories β sub-collections β articles.
You can learn more about our article hierarchy structure here.
But what if you donβt need that extra level and just want your articles to appear directly under a category?
Good news: HelpKit supports single-level collections (categories without sub-collections) as the menu depth for navigation.

Why Use This Layout?
- β Simpler navigation when you donβt have many articles.
- β Cleaner design β articles show right under the category name.
- β Perfect for βOverviewβ or βStart Hereβ sections where no extra nesting is needed.
How to Set It Up
- In your Notion database, create your main category as usual.
- Add a sub-collection, but leave its title as either:
- Untitled (gray text in Notion) β easiest way is to simply select the entire database title and hit backspace on your keyboard to remove the title
- or you can rename the database title to: no_sub_collection_name
- Add your articles underneath this sub-collection.
Thatβs it! π

HelpKit will detect this special naming and automatically flatten the hierarchy so that your articles appear directly under the main category.
Quick Video Tutorial
Example of One Level HelpKit Category
Instead of showing:
- Overview
- Introduction
- Article 1
- Article 2
Youβll now get:
- Overview
- Article 1
- Article 2
Notes
- This only works for one level of hierarchy.
- If you later add a proper sub-collection name, HelpKit will switch back to the default layout.
