πŸ“‚ Creating a Single-Level Category

Learn how to adjust your hierarchy so articles appear directly under the category for easy navigation

By default, HelpKit organizes your content in categories β†’ sub-collections β†’ articles.

Β

You can learn more about our article hierarchy structure here.

Β

But what if you don’t need that extra level and just want your articles to appear directly under a category?

Β

Good news: HelpKit supports single-level collections (categories without sub-collections) as the menu depth for navigation.

Why Use This Layout?

  • βœ… Simpler navigation when you don’t have many articles.
  • βœ… Cleaner design – articles show right under the category name.
  • βœ… Perfect for β€œOverview” or β€œStart Here” sections where no extra nesting is needed.
Β

How to Set It Up

  1. In your Notion database, create your main category as usual.
  1. Add a sub-collection, but leave its title as either:
      • Untitled (gray text in Notion) β†’ easiest way is to simply select the entire database title and hit backspace on your keyboard to remove the title
      • or you can rename the database title to: no_sub_collection_name
  1. Add your articles underneath this sub-collection.
Β

That’s it! πŸŽ‰

HelpKit will detect this special naming and automatically flatten the hierarchy so that your articles appear directly under the main category.

Example of One Level HelpKit Category

Instead of showing:

  • Overview
    • Introduction
      • Article 1
      • Article 2

You’ll now get:

  • Overview
    • Article 1
    • Article 2
Β

Notes

  • This only works for one level of hierarchy.
  • If you later add a proper sub-collection name, HelpKit will switch back to the default layout.
